Join us tomorrow for our 5210 Walk at Garfield Park, and Bike to Work next week
All are invited and encouraged to join Jump IN for Healthy Kids tomorrow, Saturday, May 11 at 10:00 a.m. at Garfield Park to participate in the specially designed 5-2-1-0 and the Outdoors; a Family Walk with Jump IN. Join Jump IN, Indy Parks, the Indy Parks Foundation, and the Indianapolis Greenways Partnership for a 60-minute walk along the Pleasant Run Greenway at Garfield Park. Led by a local dietitian, this fun walk will include tips on incorporating 5-2-1-0 into your day (5 fruits and vegetables, 2 hours or less of screen time, 1 hour of physical activity, and 0 sugar-sweetened beverages). We’ll make a few brief stops for light physical activities, games, as well as lessons about healthy eating, and tips for using screens to help increase physical activity. All fitness levels are welcome. Check in at the trailhead parking lot on Conservatory Drive just southeast of the intersection of E Pleasant Run Drive N and Conservatory Drive (where the greenway crosses the creek, southeast of the Pleasant Run bridge and Fire Station 29). A map of the park may be found on the Facebook event page. The walk is free, but please register (and complete your waiver) here.
Next Friday, May 17 is Bike to Work Day. Thousands of people across the country will leave their cars behind and make their work commutes on their bikes. In addition to simply riding your bike to work, you can also participate in other group activities as well. Bike Indianapolis (formerly IndyCog) and the YMCA Bike Hub are hosting Bike Trains, where groups ride together from one destination to another. If you’d like to bike to work but aren’t sure of a route to take, there are many online tools to help you. Here’s one, and another, and another. If this is the first time you’ll be riding your bike to work, be sure to a few things before you hit the road/trail/bike lane. 1) Check to be sure your tires are properly inflated. If you haven’t biked since last fall, you probably need some air. 2) Be sure you have a place to secure your bike at work – and be sure you have a sturdy lock if you’re using a public bike rack. 3) Don’t forget your helmet.
Our friends at the Indianapolis Greenways Partnership have many more events on their calendar in addition to Jump IN’s 5-2-1-0 walk, and we at Jump IN try to participate in as many as we can. Saturday, May 18, they’ll be hosting Walk with a Doc on the White River Greenway. We encourage you and your family to participate when you can. These are terrific ways to get your one hour of physical activity for the day and to experience an Indianapolis greenway. Each walk has its own unique theme that adds more to the experience as well. Hope to see you there.
