Jump IN for Healthy Kids in the community – Catch the Stars and Girl Scouts
Sharing 5-2-1-0 with kids and families
Jump IN for Healthy Kids is integrating our message of 5-2-1-0 (5 fruits and vegetables, 2 hours or less of recreational screen time, 1 hour of physical activity, and 0 sugar-sweetened beverages – every day) into organizations that serve kids. Our friends at the Monumental Marathon use the four, evidence-based, healthy steps in their Monumental Kids program; Energy Krazed incorporates 5-2-1-0 into their school work, and LifeSmart Youth has used 5-2-1-0 over the last few years as an important part of their teaching kids about health and development. These are just a few examples of the dozens of places you’ll find 5-2-1-0, and we’re adding more partners all the time.
This past weekend we joined two new partners to teach our message of 5-2-1-0. Catch the Stars Foundation, founded by Tamika Catchings and her sister Tauja Catchings, hosted its day-long Fitness Clinic for kids and Wellness Clinic for their parents at Pike High School. Tamika and Tauja have created a dynamic day where the whole family benefits from interactive, immersive activities that foster good nutrition, physical activity, and wellness.
Jump IN designed a fruits and vegetables relay race for the kids and hosted a lesson on family physical activity – anywhere, any time, with no equipment needed.
The day was high-energy, with lots of volunteers teaching, encouraging, and supporting the families. And what made these clinics even more special: it was free to everyone with a donation of at least 10 nonperishable food items that were given to Gleaners Food Bank. Tamika and Tauja hold this event each year and many families are repeat attendees. Put a pin in your family’s calendar for next November and keep an eye out for the details if you’d like your family to participate in 2020.
On Sunday, Jump IN joined the East Central service unit of the central Indiana Girl Scouts
Jump IN created a 5-2-1-0 Girl Scout patch this summer and have begun sharing it with central Indiana troops. The patch teaches each of the 5-2-1-0 steps with fun, engaging activities that can be modified for Girl Scouts of any age. On Sunday we were fortunate to share the patch, 5-2-1-0, and lots of jump roping with parents and troop leaders in central Indiana. If your troop is interested in the patch, contact Megan McKinney Cooper.
If you’re part of an organization that is interested in integrating 5-2-1-0 into your programming, we can help and even customize a learning module that fits your timing, your structure, and the ages you serve.
